The most popular memory card formats are:

Compact Flash (CF) cards widely available in a range of sizes and are cheaper per megabyte than other standard media.

Secure Digital (SD) widely available in a range of sizes and are roughly equivalent in price to compact flash (CF). Of smaller size, they are therefore available in many mid-range cameras.

Multi Media Card (MMC) are similar to the SD card but are not compatible with SD cards.

xD-picture Card are developed by Fuji and Olympus. They are very compact in size, but usually about twice the cost of CF or SD cards.

Memory Stick are used only by Sony Cameras. Most of MS cards are produced by Sony (the only other manufacturers are SanDisk and Lexar). Memory Stick/ Memory Stick Duo (MS Duo) MS is variation which is smaller in size, and can be used with regular MS card cameras with adapter.

When buying a digital camera it's better to choose a camera which can use CF or SD cards. Some cameras can use two different types of cards (e.g. Olympus E-300 use xD-picture Card and CF cards).
